What Do You Think?

I recently finished a course on motivation, and I was disappointed that the facilitator did not used any of the strategies suggested by the course text. We read Keller's ARCS motivational model, and I like the model so much I'm planning to use it as my dissertation topic.  I am confused when things like that happens. It made me wonder if the facilitator read the book.  I also wonder if facilitators of adult learners realized that the same motivational model they use at K-12 can also be used with adult learners.

  1. Daphney...Its tough sometimes when something so obvious to you isn't for others! Like someone lecturing on problem-based learning! Its just not right!

    1. Dr. Darci,
      I will use Blog to motivate my students to share their struggles in learning math concepts and create a plan to remedy those struggles. I would like to have more time to spend with students creating their own bags of strategies to use when they are struggling with learning as oppose to pick for them.

    I also did that course some time ago and found the insights gained relevant and applicable to my own classroom situation. I especially liked the idea of using the element of surprise and uncertainty to spark my students' curiosity.This is associated with the attention part, which is the 'A' in the ARCS. Maintaining and sustaining attention is an essential element required for motivation (Keller & Katsuaki, 2004). How do you plan to use the ARCS model in your dissertation?

    I am thinking of putting together a workshop for pre-service math and reading teachers in alternative program. I would like to teach Keller's (2010) ARCS motivational model to the teachers and see if that would affect attendance in their classes.

    1. Daphney, I'm sure teachers would benefit from learning about Keller's model. I'm assuming your workshop wouldn't provide this information in a "lecture" but instead actively engage workshop participants to show Keller's model can be applied to math teaching? After all, that is what frustrated you in the course you took, correct? ~Dr. Darci

    2. Dr Darci,
      It would be all hands-on. Many teachers already have their students class list and an idea of some characteristics of their students. My goal is to use real life learners' profile to set these motivational tactics for the students before next school year starts. At the end of the workshop, the teachers would have a lesson or a unit plan in place for them to try out, than we get back together to modify the areas of needs for the teachers and students. I like blended framework; I do not like one size fits all. What frustrated me about the class was the fact that I did not get to experience what Keller was talking about from the facilitator of the course or the course design. I would plan these tactics when designing the workshop because adult learners need motivation too.

    Great comment regarding educators using strategies from younger grades to engage and motivate older students. I did it all the time and suggest that other teachers do it as well!!!

    I am looking forward to taking that class on motivation as I think it will support my district's exploration of student engagement strategies. Did your facilitator have a preference for someone else's work, besides Keller?

    I would prefer not to comment on the facilitator. If I was not an adult learner and on my way to finish my course work for this doctoral journey, I would have quit. I will say this; The facilitator was a great example of what not to do when dealing with adult learner. I just bugged Dr. Keller until he could help me.
